Online couples therapy

Relationships take work. Without positive attention, often we can drift apart, or fall into destructive patterns. And it can feel like there is no way back. That’s when online couple therapy can help.

My focus in online couples therapy will be to help you learn effective ways to communicate, connect and heal your relationship, so that it can once again be the safe, loving and bonded place that you yearn for.

I offer a relational style of couples therapy that is dynamic, safe and containing. There is no point in letting you play out destructive patterns, so unlike individual work I will take a hands-on, directive approach - whether we're meeting online or face-to-face..

Your relationship will be my primary focus, but to facilitate change we may need to look at relational patterns that may have been set up in childhood or in previous relationships.

This isn't easy and it can stir up strong feelings, but understanding the obstacles from the past that may be getting in the way in the here and now, can be transformative.

Why online therapy?

Research shows that online couples therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions - what matters most is the therapeutic relationship and your commitment to the process.

Many couples actually find that meeting from their own space helps them feel more relaxed and open. You can settle in, make a cup of tea, and create an environment where you both feel comfortable. And you can choose the right therapist, no matter where they are based.

There's no commute, no waiting rooms, and less time pressure. You can book sessions around work and family commitments more easily. And if you're outside Bristol, or travel frequently, you can still access the same depth of therapeutic work wherever you are.

So if you both feel that you are ready to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in, the chances are that this is the right time for you to take the first step.

What to expect

First, we'll book in an initial appointment. This is an opportunity for us to see if we can work together. You'll get a sense of how I work, I'll get to know a bit about what brings you, and together we'll see if we 'click'.

After the session I suggest that you take a day or two to discuss together, how it felt to work with me. I suggest you both consult with your gut feeling as our intuition is a very good guide in these matters.

If we decide to proceed, then I will offer you a specific time and day for our weekly sessions. It's important to maintain momentum so I don't often recommend less than weekly meetings.

This is intense work, and so we do need time - I suggest a minimum of 8-10 weeks, after which it's up to you to decide when it's right to end. I do ask for at least a week's notice though.

Questions about online therapy

Do we need to be in the same room?
Ideally yes - couples therapy works best when you're together. However, if circumstances mean you're temporarily apart (travel, work, etc.), we can still work together with you both joining from different locations.
What if the connection drops?
Rarely, technical difficulties interrupt our session, in which case usually we can switch to a phonecall.
Is it confidential?
Absolutely. I use encrypted, secure video platforms. Your sessions are completely private and confidential, just like in-person therapy.

Fee

For couples counselling, my fee is £95 per 50 minute session.

I do offer some concessionary places so if this is a barrier to you, please contact me to discuss.
